Join Us in Celebrating TCDD Legislative Champions

The 88th Texas Legislature held its biennial regular session earlier this year, with lawmakers considering thousands of bills. Capitol observers and advocates found the session to be particularly contentious as wrangling between the House and the Senate led to a variety of unresolved priority items. Amidst those disputes, however, several disability issues saw progress, either being signed into law or making it further in the process than ever before. This advancement was the result of tireless work from both members of the disability community and elected officials who fought for the measures at the Capitol.

The Texas Council for Developmental Disabilities (TCDD) has identified Legislative Champions for the 88th legislative session. These are lawmakers who actively worked toward improving inclusion, breaking down barriers, and promoting an increased quality of life for Texans with developmental disabilities (DD). Recognizing the important role that legislative staff play at the Capitol, TCDD has also identified staffers who contributed to progressing legislation helpful to people with disabilities.

On Wednesday, Sept. 20, TCDD will host a webinar titled “TCDD Legislative Champions for the 88th Legislature.” The event is free, open to the public, and will feature:

• a brief overview of the Legislative Champions program;
• a recognition of lawmakers and staff honored as TCDD Legislative Champions; and
• an overview of their relevant efforts and accomplishments for the recent session.

Registration Details

The event was held via Zoom. Participants had to register ahead of time to attend.

About TCDD Legislative Champions

Following each legislative session in Texas, TCDD recognizes a list of lawmakers who went above and beyond in actively supporting legislation to benefit the lives of people with DD. The program began in 2019 following the 86th regular session. In 2021, the program expanded to also include legislative staff. The Council approves the acknowledgments following each session. The program recognizes noteworthy efforts at the Capitol and strengthens relationships for future sessions.
