Alamo Area Council of Governments — Support for Older Adults with DD and their Caregivers

Project Goal
Support older adults with developmental disabilities (DD) and their caregivers to age in place, improve their health, and attain a higher quality of life.

Project Summary
The Alamo Area Council of Governments (AACOG) is spearheading an innovative project in the San Antonio area to holistically address the health and well-being of older adults with DD and their caregivers. The project provides classes and other educational resources to meet wide-ranging nutrition, fitness, and wellness needs. Through partnerships with community organizations, the project offers training on financial empowerment, tax preparation, schooling, utility assistance, and independent living.

The project also offers training to AACOG staff to identify aging caregivers supporting adults with DD and make appropriate referrals for support services. By providing information, resources, and support, AACOG’s project is working to better serve and support the unique needs of older adults with DD and their caregivers.
