Project Goal
Establish a sustainable sexual assault prevention model for people with developmental disabilities (DD) that enhances self-advocacy and leads to an enriched quality of life
Project Summary
In rural West Texas, there is a great need for region-specific and DD-informed training and mentoring related to sexual assault prevention and response. This need is driven by an increasing number of barriers to prevent sexual assault among people with DD and to provide support to victims and survivors. These barriers include a lack of awareness, a limited availability of educational services, and a general misunderstanding of perceptions, vulnerability, and anxiety surrounding sexuality and sexual assault among people with DD.
The West Central Texas Council of Governments is developing evidence-based sexual assault prevention training for people with DD in rural West Texas. The project includes activities to further awareness on sexuality and sexual assault prevention; provide follow-up and support group services; and improve knowledge of how to report incidents and concerns.
