Project Goal
Reduce health inequities by improving the capacity and confidence of health care professionals to provide care to people with developmental disabilities (DD)
Project Summary
The University of Houston-Clear Lake is developing a curriculum for students in health-related training programs and a virtual continuing education program for practicing health care professionals across Texas who work with people with DD. The project includes behavioral skills training, including modeling and hands-on practice, for student. In addition to increasing the number of health care professionals who are prepared to serve patients with DD, the project will also increase awareness of health inequities for people with DD, dispel stereotypes, and increase knowledge of health equity and anti-discrimination policy.
TCDD supports health equity projects to increase knowledge of the lived experience of people with DD and their families and to improve self-direction, accessibility, and effectiveness of treatment and supports for people with DD. These efforts promote statewide capacity building and systems change in educating and training self-advocates, family members, doctors, and other professionals.
