Texas Tech University — Facts of Life Project

Project Summary
Texas Tech University developed a project to support the sexual health of people with developmental disabilities (DD) across Texas through training and educational opportunities. Sexual health education in the U.S. has largely neglected those with DD as well as those with other physical disabilities. The Facts of Life Project delivered a comprehensive, inclusive sexual health education curriculum developed specifically to educate people with DD.

Through three-day “train the trainer” workshops, parents, families, caregivers, self-advocates, providers, and allies from communities across the state received intensive training on how to teach the curriculum. Workshop participants also received educational materials, engaged in discussions, and facilitated an all-day community training event. These newly trained individuals developed knowledge and skills to provide education in their communities, which allowed for a wider impact, especially in rural and underserved areas of Texas that often lack access to resources and educational materials tailored to people with DD that address sexual health and healthy relationships.
