Texas State Independent Living Council – Leadership Development and Advocacy Training in Rural Areas

Project Summary
The Texas State Independent Living Council coordinated a project to increase leadership and advocacy by people with developmental disabilities (DD) in rural areas so they could have better access to integrated, affordable, and accessible housing. The project was designed to:

  • provide leadership and advocacy training for people with DD;
  • increase the number of people with DD on housing boards, commissions, advisory committees, and other planning boards; and
  • develop coalitions to increase housing options for people with DD.
       

TCDD funding supported this project to increase access to information and training for people with DD, families, and caregivers to advocate for themselves and collaborate with allies to impact public policy, service systems, and community supports.
