Project Goal
Improve health education and practices for young adults with and without developmental disabilities (DD) through an inclusive school health program
Project Summary
The Healthy LEAP (Lifestyle Education, and Practice) project incorporates a 10-week series of lessons into inclusive health education classes for students at 19 school campuses. The program and its curriculum provide instruction on food groups, healthy weight, bone health, behavior and stress management, sports nutrition and hydration, exercise and injury prevention, sun safety, personal hygiene, and tobacco and alcohol use.
Through lessons and activities adapted to their age groups, youth and young adults with and without intellectual and developmental disabilities will work together, in an integrated setting, to acquire the information and tools needed to make healthy choices. These lessons will empower them to manage and improve their health and aid them in making conscious choices for their future well-being.
