Special Olympics Texas — Healthy LEAP (Lifestyle, Education, and Practice)

The Healthy LEAP (Lifestyle, Education, and Practice) project incorporated a 10-week series of lessons into inclusive health education classes for students at 19 school campuses across Texas. Through the program, Special Olympics Texas provided instruction on food groups, healthy weight, bone health, behavior and stress management, sports nutrition and hydration, exercise and injury prevention, sun safety, personal hygiene, and tobacco and alcohol use.

With lessons and activities adapted to their age groups, youth and young adults with and without developmental disabilities (DD) worked together in integrated settings to gain the knowledge and skills to make healthy choices. These lessons supported young adults to manage and improve their health while making their own choices for their future well-being.

Overall, the project included more than 31,500 participants across Texas. This total included students with DD, students without DD, educators, family members, and others.
