With a Building Community Capacity grant from the Texas Council for Developmental Disabilities, Community Healthcore is raising awareness and creating opportunities for people with disabilities in East Texas to be included in community life. Community Healthcore’s “Champions of Inclusion” video highlights some of the people, projects, and laws that have increased the number of opportunities available for individuals with disabilities to participate in the community.
The video states that every citizen makes up a community. Community Healthcore works to ensure that all citizens have access to meaningful community and social activities. By providing mini-grants, Community Healthcore funded local projects that created more inclusive communities and allowed people with disabilities to make their own choices and be independent. The video encourages people to get involved by volunteering, and some of the people in the video discuss how they got involved with local projects, whether it was coordinating a cooking class, attending a book club, or advocating for respectful language legislation.
