October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month, also known as NDEAM. This is a time to acknowledge and celebrate the positive impact of people with disabilities in the American workforce. NDEAM began in 1945 as a weeklong national observance of the contributions of people with disabilities. Over 80 years later, we are carrying the torch for independence and opportunity for all Texans. The official national theme for NDEAM 2026 is Celebrating Value and Talent.
Professional Pathways: A Mentorship Program for Careers in the DD Field

Last chance! Applications for Professional Pathways close this Thursday, Oct. 15. Professional Pathways is a mentorship program for Texans interested in working in the field of developmental disabilities. This mentorship program, facilitated by TCDD, is ideal for Texans with disabilities, family members, or professionals early in their careers.
How it Works
- Mentees are selected first and then paired with a mentor based on areas of desired interest and professional growth.
- Mentors and mentees will meet at least six times over a defined six-month period.
- Each mentorship will be tailored to the professional goals of the mentee. Goals will be established at the beginning of the mentorship and regular communication with TCDD is required.

Expanding Career Opportunities in South Texas

Many Texans with DD want to work, but don’t know where to start. They may need training, mentorship, or connections to help them find competitive employment in their communities. TCDD recently funded a grant to help address these needs and expand employment opportunities for people with disabilities in the Rio Grande Valley.
Through the TCDD grant, The Valley Association for Independent Living (VAIL) is helping prepare Texans with DD for employment.
Grant participants are trained in resume writing, interview skills, job application submission, and more. VAIL is also training local business owners about accessible hiring practices and the value that employees with disabilities bring to the workplace.
Since its inception, this program has trained over 80 people with disabilities seeking employment. The program has facilitated job placements, enhanced skills, and fostered confidence. They continue to build partnerships and communication between employers and Texans with DD who are ready to work.
