Project Summary
Educational Programs Inspiring Communities (EPIC) provided training in leadership skills for students with developmental disabilities (DD) ages 16-22. The project included employment training, advocacy training, health and wellness education, and a mentoring program. EPIC partnered with the Houston Independent School District, The Arc of Greater Houston, and the Houston Food Bank to give participants job training and employment opportunities. Participants enhanced their knowledge of nutrition, wellness, and health care, giving them tools to make healthier choices in their lives. EPIC also developed training resources for students with DD to better understand how they can be involved and lead their admission, review, and dismissal meetings as well as how to navigate Social Security benefits and work incentives.
TCDD funding supported this project to increase access to information and training for people with DD, families, and caregivers to advocate for themselves and collaborate with allies to impact public policy, service systems, and community supports.
