Join Us in Recognizing DD Awareness Month

March is DD Awareness Month
March is Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month. The Texas Council for Developmental Disabilities (TCDD) asks Texans to make it a priority to learn more about and connect with their neighbors with developmental disabilities (DD) and to help create more inclusive communities across the state.

In partnership with the national awareness month campaign organized by the National Association of Councils on Developmental Disabilities, TCDD leads the awareness initiative for Texas. Throughout March, TCDD will raise awareness about innovations to strengthen community supports; provide a forum for discussion about disability-related topics; highlight advocacy training opportunities; host an inclusive virtual workshop with Texas A&M Agrilife Extension Service; and more.

“This DD Awareness Month takes place at a particularly important, pivotal time as our state continues to navigate the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic,” said Dr. Beth Stalvey, TCDD executive director. “We hope that everyone will make a point to recognize the vital contributions of the DD community and take action to shape a more equitable Texas for individuals with disabilities.”

In an official proclamation from Texas Gov. Greg Abbott declaring March DD Awareness Month, the governor said, “There is no doubt that Texas is better when every citizen is able to flourish in their community. Students with DD who are included in classroom settings outside of special education are more likely to realize their full academic potential. When people with disabilities are included in the workforce, they have an opportunity to earn a competitive wage, work as part of a team, and support our state’s strong economy. People with DD who are involved in their community generally live longer, healthier lives and are more likely to give back to their communities. When inclusion becomes a way of life, Texas’ communities thrive.”

Community members can get involved throughout the month by accessing resources on TCDD’s website and social media channels; connecting with policymakers and media professionals to advocate for the change they wish to see in Texas; and attending the TCDD Regional Coordinators’ free virtual workshop, “Reaching ALL Texans Through Inclusive Extension Programming.”

TCDD strives to create opportunities for all Texans with disabilities to be fully included in their communities and exercise control over their own lives. The Council funds over 35 innovative projects across the state connecting with individuals with disabilities, caregivers, partners, and providers in the communities where they live and work. TCDD serves as a resource to the state government to create responsive policies and systems and helps communities across Texas build capacity to support and include people with DD in all areas of life.
