Alamo Area Council of Governments — Support for Older Adults with DD and their Caregivers

The Alamo Area Council of Governments (AACOG) spearheaded an innovative project in the San Antonio area that holistically addressed the health and well-being of older adults with developmental disabilities (DD) and their caregivers. The project provided classes and other educational resources to meet participants’ wide-ranging nutrition, fitness, and wellness needs.

Through partnerships with community organizations, the project offered training on financial skills, tax preparation, utility assistance, and independent living. AACOG also developed educational videos and a downloadable booklet called a Health Passport (PDF, 16 pages, 20.28 MB). People with DD and caregivers can use the booklet to compile important information that they may want to share with doctors, service providers, or others.

TCDD funding supports projects that develop new and innovative initiatives to support older adults with DD and their caregivers. As the number of older adults with DD continues to grow, the service system in Texas must be better equipped to serve their unique needs by providing information, resources, and support.
