The Arc of Texas — Partners in Disability Leadership

Project Goal
Enhance the strategic leadership capacity in Texas’ intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) service and support system by developing and implementing training based on best practices with a Texas-centric focus.

Project Summary
The Arc of Texas’ Partners in Disability Leadership program will tackle the lack of leadership training for IDD staff in Texas by developing a comprehensive program specific to the IDD service community. Particular focus will be on individuals from groups identified as disproportionately underrepresented in Texas leadership, including non-English speakers, those with limited English proficiency, self-advocates, and IDD leaders in underserved areas such as rural communities.

The Arc of Texas will develop a curriculum that includes information about current service environments as well as state and local legislative challenges or opportunities. Community partners and program stakeholders will help develop and tailor the curriculum to the Texas IDD service community. With inputs from Texas Advocates and the Institute for Person-Centered Practices, the curriculum will increase participants’ knowledge and commitment to self-direction and full inclusion of people with IDD.

Trainers and experts in the field will be recruited to lead the different curriculum training modules. Speakers will be selected based on their expertise on the subject matter they are presenting, and on their presentation styles to ensure subject matter competency and participant engagement.

The program will graduate up to 20 leaders yearly from each of its seven-month trainings.
