Metrocare Services — Understanding Disability Issues and Perspectives

Metrocare Services developed training materials and resources to strengthen public understanding of issues impacting people with developmental disabilities (DD), including barriers to accessibility and independent living. The project team worked with disability advocates to develop videos, presentations, and informational handouts.

The project’s video series covered topics such as:

  • the history of services and support for people with DD;
  • the landscape of disability services in Texas;
  • state-supported living centers;
  • DD-informed perspectives on intersectionality; and
  • inclusive environmental meeting design.

Along with resources, the project offered insight on policy strategies to improve inclusion and service delivery for Texans with DD. The project also provided tools for community leaders, elected officials, and others to have meaningful conversations with people with disabilities, ask important questions respectfully, and view policy issues with the disability community in mind.

TCDD funds projects that give communities, elected officials, and other leaders the tools to have meaningful conversations with people with disabilities, ask important questions respectfully, and view policy issues with the disability community in mind. TCDD also promotes ongoing learning that addresses the needs of elected leaders and staff who are unfamiliar with disability issues and want to learn more.
