The Walsh Company — Partners in Policymaking

Project Goal
Increase the ability of participants to interact with public officials, to influence public policy, and to obtain the most appropriate state-of-the-art services for themselves and others.

Project Summary
This project was proposed to manage the Partners in Policymaking leadership training program, which started in Texas in August 1990. Partners in Policymaking is designed for adults with developmental disabilities (DD) and parents of young children with DD. Participants from across the state were expected to meet two days a month for eight months to explore disabilities issues, best practices, and the policymaking and legislative processes, to strengthen self-advocacy skills, and to increase personal empowerment. The project was intended to increase the ability of participants to interact with public officials, to influence public policy, and to obtain the most appropriate state-of-the-art services for themselves and others. Before 1998, the project was managed directly by Council staff, with the Walsh Company providing administrative support.
