The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) is regarded as one of the most significant pieces of disability-related legislation ever signed into law. The ADA is a civil rights law that prohibits discrimination based on disability, and it has had a profound impact on the lives of people with disabilities in Texas and around the country.
This July marks the 30th anniversary of the ADA and, to celebrate this milestone, a series of ADA-themed webinars will be held throughout the month. People who participate in the free webinars will learn from experts about various topics, such as disclosing your disability, adaptive recreation opportunities, and innovations in accessible transportation. The series, ADA 30: Moving Forward, is coordinated by a group of over 20 organizations.
Between now and the end of July, seven webinars will be held. While most of the webinars will focus on a specific topic related to the ADA, the webinar on Friday, July 24, will serve as the primary celebration of the ADA’s anniversary. The July 24 event will feature notable disability advocates sharing their experiences with the ADA, including what it was like to see the law implemented, how it has furthered the civil rights of Americans with disabilities, and where we still need to go. Featured speakers at the event will include Lex Frieden, a chief architect of the ADA, and Anne Washington, the daughter of Justin Dart, a key figure behind the creation of the law.
