Culturally Appropriate Family Supports
Improve the quality of life for Asian Americans with developmental disabilities (DD) while increasing public awareness of DD
The Light and Salt Association established a community support center for Asian Americans with DD and their family members. The project ran programs to support people with DD in developing independent living skills. Family members of people with DD also learned new skills and resources to become better advocates.
The project’s programs included Project SMILE, which offered activities and education on topics such as finances, job skills, and self-care. Additional programs and services provided through the project included weekend programs for children, training workshops for parents, support groups, and individual counseling sessions.
- 191 people with DD and family members had greater access to culturally appropriate supports
- 189 families received support through memberships with the Light and Salt Association
- 77 parents with children who have DD increased their understanding of self-advocacy
- 80 outreach events educated the local Asian American community on disability-related issues
