Hill Country Mental Health and Developmental Disabilities Centers — People Empowering People

People Empowering People

Project Goal
Support people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) in Comal County in strengthening their advocacy skills to increase community inclusion and job opportunities.

Project Summary
People Empowering People aims to eliminate barriers to education, employment, financial security, inclusion, and quality of life for people with IDD in Comal County and their families. The project developed out of needs identified in 2018 by a coalition of people with IDD, service providers, state agencies, and other organizations. The coalition found that people with IDD in Comal County had limited options for daily care and enrichment.

Through training seminars and the creation of a local self-advocacy chapter, the project will support people with IDD and their families in developing skills to recognize and advocate for their needs. The project will also provide training on navigating the system of IDD services and supports. After completing the project, participants will have a greater understanding of their rights and the resources available to support self-advocacy and create change in their communities.
