The Texas Council for Developmental Disabilities (TCDD) was thrilled to host its Inaugural Disability Advocacy Summit on July 16-17, 2021. The virtual conference was an opportunity for disability advocates across the state to connect, collaborate, and advance their leadership and advocacy skills.
TCDD thanks all Disability Advocacy Summit all attendees, including, speakers, facilitators, self-advocates (people with disabilities), family members, professionals, and youth.
The summit kicked off on Friday, July 16 with a keynote address from Carolyn Krawczyk, producer of Overheard with Evan Smith and ATX Together at Austin PBS. Krawczyk shared her insights as an experienced TV news producer committed to trustworthy and inclusive reporting, disability advocate, and sibling. Saturday’s programming begun with a keynote from Santa Perez, self-advocate and chairperson of the Nevada Governor’s Council on Developmental Disabilities. Her session, titled, “Becoming an Active Advocate,” is designed to help attendees take their advocacy efforts to the next level. Concurrent sessions each day covered topics ranging from advocacy basics and goal-setting to issue-specific deep dives, learning how to build a coalition from the ground up, how to tell your story, and more. The sessions provided opportunities to connect with peer groups, including siblings, young adults, Partners in Policymaking graduates, and advocates living in your region of the state.
